Newcastle United are in need of a striker this summer, after having seen both Callum Wilson and Chris Wood struggle to find the back of the net on a consistent basis. They will need a goalscorer in their ranks though, if they are to improve on their 11th place Premier League finish and potentially challenge for the European qualification spots.

It had looked like the club had found their man and were closing in on a move for Hugo Ekitike of Stade Reims. It is not hard to see why the club were interested in the French striker, who enjoyed a brilliant breakout season, and some have even compared to a young Karim Benzema. But as that transfer saga has dragged on, the Magpies will need to look at other options.

One interesting name who has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in the past is Gabriel Barbosa, as a £17 million transfer is believed to have been briefly discussed in January.

As reported by Chronicle Live, Barbosa is keen on a move to Newcastle United but could have to play the waiting game to see if he can get his dream move to the Premier League. His representatives are open to continuing discussions on the player.

Barbosa has already gotten a big move to Europe in the past, when he had joined Inter Milan. But that did not work out and soon, he would find himself back in Brazil.

He currently plays for Flamengo and has well and truly rediscovered his form there. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 103 goals and provided 28 assists in 159 appearances for the club. He also has a lot more experience under his belt now and could actually succeed in Europe, if he did get a move there once again.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle United do indeed end up making a move for Barbosa this summer.
