Newcastle United have been linked with a number of players over the course of the last several months. A long chase for Sven Botman recently came to a conclusion. The Magpies are believed to be have been interested in the Ligue 1 winning centre-back for a long time but it was only recently that they were able to beat off compeition and win the race for his signature.

Now, it looks like they have their eyes on another long-term target, who is available on a free transfer this summer, although it had been believed in the past that the club had decided to not go after him anymore.

As reported by the Mirror, Newcastle United are still hopeful of landing Jesse Lingard although Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have made contact with the former Manchester United star.

Lingard has left Manchester United this summer, after having spent such a long time at the club, as he had struggled for playing time at Old Trafford and his contract with the Red Devils had also run out. Newcastle United have been linked with the England international for a long time and were even believed to be close to a loan move in January, although it failed to materialise.

Newcastle United still have their eyes on the England international

Lingard might not have gotten a lot of chances at Manchester United, but he proved what he was capable of, when he was on a half a season loan spell with West Ham United in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

During his time with the Hammers, he was one of the best players in all of the Premier League and it is not hard to see why there is so much interest in him as a free agent.

Of course, there would be an element of risk involved in any move for Lingard this summer but at the same time, it also has the potential to be a transfer masterstroke.
