Eddie Howe reacts to Newcastle United signing Sven Botman
Newcastle United have finally gotten a deal for Sven Botman over the line. The club have been linked with the Dutch centre-back for months and can finally now call him a part of the Magpies’ squad. It is an incredibly ambitious move to say the least and could end up playing a big part in their attempt to move further up the Premier League table, after finishing 11th this season.
Since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager, the club appear to have focussed mostly on strengthening at the back and it has done wonders as well.
In January, they signed Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn, while Matt Targett was brought in on loan from Aston Villa. This summer, that loan move has been made permanent, while the Magpies have also added Nick Pope and Botman to their squad.
Howe must be delighted with the club having signed Botman on a permanent basis from Lille. As reported by Newcastle United’s official website, speaking about the signing, the manager said:
"“I’m delighted Sven is joining us. He is technically very good, physically very good and has a great attitude.“At 22, he already has solid experience at the top level but he is at a great age to grow with this team. I am looking forward to getting to work with him and seeing him with his new team-mates.”"

Botman has already proven himself as a league-winning centre-back, having clinched the Ligue 1 title with Lille in the past. And at just 22 years of age, he is nowhere near his prime as a footballer.
Thus, this promises to be an exceptional long-term signing for Newcastle United if the Dutchman is able to adjust to the Premier League. It remains to be seen how that turns out, but it must be said that he has all the attributes required to be a major success for the Magpies.
One does feel that Newcastle United have enough options at the back now though and their focus must shift towards strengthen in other areas of the pitch, if they are to challenge the traditional big six for European spots in the near future.
