Newcastle United have already added a couple of defenders to their ranks this summer. The loan move for Matt Targett has been made a permanent one after his incredibly impressive spell in the second half of last season. On the other hand, the Magpies succeeded in signing Sven Botman from Lille as well, after a long chase for the Dutch centre-back.

It appears that they could try to strengthen their defensive ranks further, in what is a bit of a surprise, considering the club already signed Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier last January as well.

The latest player in their sights appears to Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, who has barely featured in Pep Guardiola’s side since arriving in the summer of 2020. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 24 appearances and played 1717 minutes of football in total in the Premier League for the Citizens over the past couple of campaigns.

As reported by 90min, Manchester City have informed Ake that he is free to leave this summer. There is a lot of interest in the Dutchman though as he is being considered by Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, while Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Newcastle United are believed to be keen as well.

Chelsea are the club who have been most heavily linked with Ake in recent days. The Blues are in serious need of defensive reinforcements this summer, having lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers, and Cesar Azpilicueta could end up joining Barcelona as well.

The situation is far from ideal for them to say the least and it looks like they will be pushing for Ake this summer.

On the other hand, it remains to be seen if Newcastle United end up making a move for the Manchester City defender as well, with so much competition to deal with to get to his signature.
