Newcastle United have been linked with quite a few Manchester United players in recent times. The rumours about Jesse Lingard are well documented and go back several months, even though a move never ended up materialising. On the other hand, at one point of time, it had looked like the Magpies were on the verge of signing Dean Henderson but that did not happen either. Instead, the club have signed Nick Pope from Burnley. They had even been linked with Eric Bailly and Paul Pogba.

Now, it looks like there is another player from Manchester United, who was on the radar of Eddie Howe’s side, but a move looks very unlikely.

As reported by The Times, it is understood that Newcastle United, and another Premier League club, made tentative enquiries about Scott McTominay’s availability earlier. But it looks like Manchester United do not want to let the midfielder go and Erik ten Hag sees him in his first-team plans.

McTominay has had an interesting time in the Manchester United senior team. He has been a regular starter and has mostly blown hot and cold. On top of his game, he looks like a fantastic player but then, there are stretches when it feels like he should not be starting for the Red Devils.

Overall, while McTominay has his shortcomings, he is a solid Premier League-level player and it even feels like there is another gear to his game that he has not unlocked yet, at least on a consistent basis.

But he might not be the type of player who Newcastle United need immediately. There are other positions on the pitch which are in more urgent need of reinforcements.

It remains to be seen how things turn out from here on in the transfer window for the Magpies but a move for McTominay does not seem to be on the cards.
