Not too long ago, it had looked like Hugo Ekitike’s move to Newcastle United was only a matter of time with rumours suggesting that the club had managed to agree terms with both the player and Stade Reims over a transfer. Since then though, things have continued to drag on and now, there seem to be serious doubts over the move happening.

There have been suggestions that other clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, are interested in signing Ekitike this summer.

Let’s see how things transpire from here on but the longer this transfer saga continues to drag on, the more difficult it will become for Newcastle United to keep their sole focus on signing Ekitike. In fact, they are already being linked with other strikers as alternative targets.

As reported by GIVEMESPORT, journalist Keith Downie said about the situation:

"“I have to say, the longer this goes on, and the more noises that come out from his people and Newcastle are willing to walk away.“I mean, it was described to me yesterday as Newcastle are getting frustrated because the whole transfer has been difficult. And I think that’s putting it lightly to be honest. I think they are getting frustrated.”"

There is a worrying update on the Ekitike to Newcastle United situation

Ekitike has shown tremendous potential since breaking through in Ligue 1 last season while representing Stade Reims. Still just 20 years of age, it looks like he has the potential and attributes to go on to be one of the best strikers in the world in the near future if he can continue to develop at this rate.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Ekitike scored 10 goals and provided 3 assists in 23 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

As a result, signing someone like Ekitike would be considered as a major coup on the part of Newcastle United but at the same time, they must keep their eyes on other players as well, as there does not seem to be any surety that they will be able to pull this move off.

It remains to be seen how things turn out from here and a move for Ekitike is not completely off the table for Newcastle United yet, but at the moment, it looks much more uncertain than it did a week ago.
