Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Sven Botman for several months. The Dutch centre-back proved himself to be a league-winning defender during his time at Lille and is expected to move away this summer. And there has been no lack of interest in his signature either.

Italian champions, AC Milan, had been linked with a move for him as well and they appeared to be the favourites as too. But as a transfer for him dragged on, it opened up an opportunity for the Magpies to swoop in. And it looks like Eddie Howe’s side might have managed to do just that.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United could have moved a step closer to signing Botman after fresh reports in both Italy and France that AC Milan are now unable to meet Lille’s asking price.

It goes without saying that this is a massive boost for Newcastle United and now, it remains to be seen if they can bring the Dutchman to St James’ Park in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Newcastle United receive major boost in the race to sign Botman

If Newcastle United are indeed able to sign Botman, it would represent a massive boost for the club and would be a real statement as well.

The Magpies finished 11th in the Premier League last season but would not be expected to stop there. Instead, if they are able to continue performing like they have under the management of Howe till now, one cannot rule out their chances of pushing for a top six spot next season.

Defence has been an area Howe is believed to have been looking to improve in this summer. Dan Burn’s arrival in January proved to be a major success and if they can sign Botman, it has the potential to be even better.
