Newcastle United have been linked with a number of players this summer but till now have not been able to get deals over the line. The only player that they have signed is Matt Targett, who had impressed on loan from Aston Villa last season. Other than that, the Magpies are yet to make any new additions to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Sooner or later, that is expected to change though. Two of the players that they have been heavily linked with recently are Hugo Ekitike of Stade Reims and Sven Botman of Lille. And it appears that Newcastle United are closing in on the French striker.

As reported by Sky Sports, personal terms are close to being agreed with Ekitike ahead of his proposed move to St James’ Park. There is still work to be done though. If terms are agreed, the hope is that the youngster will arrive next week for a medical and to finalise the transfer as well.

Signing Ekitike would be a major boost for Newcastle United, as both Callum Wilson and Chris Wood struggled last season, to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

Newcastle United appear to be closing in on major signing

Ekitike was one of the breakout stars in Ligue 1 last season and he has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe this summer, including Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United.

Thus, it goes without saying that if Newcastle United are able to complete a move for the young French striker, it would be a major coup on their part as well as a statement of intent.

Ekitike has the potential to be one of the top strikers in all of Europe in the future if he can continue to develop like this and could be the perfect representation of the project at Newcastle United as well.
