Newcastle United are expected to be looking to strengthen in a few positions this summer. One of them is centre-back. Dan Burn enjoyed great success after arriving last January and is believed to be one of the key reasons behind the Magpies’ vast improvement in the second half of the campaign, as they rose out of the relegation zone and ultimately ended up finishing in 11th in the Premier League table.

It is believed that Eddie Howe wants to add another centre-back to his squad though and most of the recent rumours have linked the club with Sven Botman of Lille.

But as that transfer saga has dragged on, Newcastle United need to make sure that they have their eyes on other centre-backs as well and it looks like they might have the opportunity to sign one in a bargain transfer deal.

As reported by the Mirror, Newcastle United have been offered the chance to sign Manchester United’s Eric Bailly. It is believed that Erik ten Hag is ready to let the defender leave this summer and the Red Devils could even let him go for around £8.5 million even though ideally they would want a transfer fee around £20 million for the Ivory Coast international star.

During his time at Villarreal, Bailly was considered as one of the most exciting young defenders in all of Europe and appeared to be destined for big things.

But he has not been able to fulfil that potential after joining Manchester United. In fact, he has not even come close, as he has struggled with both form and fitness at Old Trafford, and to be honest has not been given enough chances. Thus, a move away from the club could suit him well.

Would it be wise on the part of Newcastle United to go after a defender who has played more than 15 Premier League games in a season just once since joining Manchester United in the summer of 2016? Most probably not.
