Not too long ago, it was looking like Newcastle United’s move for Hugo Ekitike was only a matter of time. The Frenchman enjoyed a brilliant breakout season in Ligue 1 with Stade Reims and would be considered as a major coup for any club in Europe right now. Since then though, the transfer has dragged on and with Borussia Dortmund also believed to be interested in the youngster, there are now serious question marks over whether it will go through or not.

Newcastle United do need to sign a new striker though with neither Callum Wilson nor Chris Wood particularly impressive last season.

As a result, the club must keep their eyes on alternatives for Ekitike and it looks like they have a few on their radar indeed.

One of them seems to be Gianluca Scamacca, who has enjoyed a very good season in the Serie A with Sassuolo. On the other hand, another player in their sights appears to be Chelsea’s Armando Broja, who had a promising loan spell at Southampton and is very highly-rated. Craig Hope tweeted out regarding the situation:

Newcastle United seem to have eyes on Chelsea star as Ekitike alternative

The best case scenario will definitely be Newcastle United signing Ekitike, who seems to be their first choice at this point of time. But with nothing over the line yet, and a club like Borussia Dortmund seemingly interest, anything can happen.

It must be pointed out that someone like Broja can prove to be a great signing for Newcastle United as well. He had a very promising season at Southampton and while he might not have scored a lot of goal, the potential is clearly there.

Scamacca is a very highly-rated player as well but for him, it looks like the preference is to stay in Italy.
