Not too long ago, it had looked like Hugo Ekitike to Newcastle United was only a matter of time. Rumours had emerged that the Magpies had been able to agree deals with both the player and his club, Stade Reims, having chased the striker since the start of the year. And it is safe to say that it had the potential to be a major coup for them.

Ekitike had burst onto the scene last season and showed incredible ability in the French top flight, especially for a teenager and many believe that if he can continue to develop like this, he can go on to become one of the best strikers in the game in the not too distant future.

As a result, there was a lot of excitement amongst the Newcastle United fans about the move but as the saga has dragged on, some worries have risen that it might not end up happening after all.

Now, some light has been shed on the reason behind the hold up and it looks like it has a lot to do with interest on the part of Borussia Dortmund. Craig Hope tweeted out:

Reason why Ekitike to Newcastle United transfer move is not complete yet revealed

Borussia Dortmund have recently lost one of the best strikers in all of football in the form of Erling Haaland, who has gone on to join Manchester City.

Thus, naturally, they will be hoping to find a replacement for him and it looks like Ekitike has caught their eye.

It is safe to say that that is not good news for Newcastle United. With the track record that Borussia Dortmund have of developing players, it is not hard to see why someone like Ekitike might be interested in a move to the Bundesliga giants over the Magpies.
