There had been a lot of hype surrounding Newcastle United’s plans heading into the summer transfer window. The club already showed in January that while they won’t be reckless, they are not afraid to splash out when it comes to bringing in new players. The arrivals at the start of the year had the desired effect as the Magpies climbed out of the relegation zone and finished 11th in the Premier League. As a result, they could look to repeat the trick.

One of the positions that they definitely need to improve in is up front. Neither Callum Wilson nor Chris Wood were particularly impressive last season and if the club are to challenge for the European qualification spots, they will need someone who can find the back of the net consistently.

Thus, they had been linked with a number of strikers over the past several weeks and months, and it had looked like a move for Hugo Ekitike of Stade Reims was close. Since then though, things have gone cold regarding the transfer.

But it looks like fans have nothing to be worried about and the move is still on. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Dean Jones said regarding the situation:

"“The Ekitike deal is still on – Newcastle fans are just going to have to trust the process here! I’m told it is imminent but who knows what that means at this point in terms of a time frame.”"

Newcastle United transfer appears to be imminent

Ekitike burst onto the scene at Stade Reims last season and established himself as one of the most exciting young strikers in all of Europe.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, the 19-year-old Frenchman scored 11 goals and provided 4 assists in 26 appearances last season across all competitions.

Thus, if Newcastle United are indeed able to get a deal for the youngster over the line, it would be a statement of intent on the part of the club. He has also been linked with clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United in recent times, which shows how highly he is rated.
