It is safe to say that Newcastle United have been linked with Sven Botman for a long time now. The initial rumours had broken out last January and have never quite gone away, despite the Magpies transforming from a team in danger of being relegated from the Premier League to one of the most in-form teams in the second half of the season, and finishing the campaign sitting at a respectable 11th position on the table.

One of the major reasons behind that was the club strengthening their defence in January. They signed Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier on permanent deals, and brought in Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa till the end of the season, although that has been made permanent this summer as well after the left-back’s brilliant performances.

It is believed that the Magpies are still looking to add a centre-back to their ranks this summer though and have been heavily linked with a move for Botman. It had looked like they were closing in on the Lille defender as well, but now, there appears to be a twist.

As reported by The Telegraph, Newcastle United are set to issue a ‘take it or leave it’ ultimatum over Botman transfer after the player’s transfer asking price was raised from £30 million to £36 million.

Newcastle United’s attempt to sign Botman is in danger of falling apart

This transfer chase for Botman has had its fair share of hurdles from the very beginning. Not too long ago, it had looked like the player was destined to join AC Milan and had a deal in place.

But as that moved slowly, it opened up the door for Newcastle United again, to swoop in, but now, there appears to be this new hurdle in the potential deal.

Let’s see how things play out, but if a move for Botman drags too long or Newcastle United are unhappy with the situation, they should just try to go after a different centre-back instead.
