If the rumours are anything to go by, it looks like a centre-back is near the top of Eddie Howe’s wish list for the summer. Newcastle United have already been linked with a number of players in the position. In recent days and weeks, the links with Sven Botman of Lille have heated up, as it looks like the Dutch defender is almost certain to leave the French club this summer.

While Newcastle United have been linked with Botman for months now, rumours have suggested that he prefers to continue playing in the Champions League and is keen on joining AC Milan, although he is open-minded about a potential move to St James’ Park as well.

Newcastle United must keep their options open though, in case a move for Botman fails to transpire and it looks like they have a player from Juventus in their sights.

As reported by Tuttosport (via Football Italia), Newcastle United are continuing to push for Merih Demiral of Juventus and do not plan to give up anytime soon.

Newcastle United are pushing to sign the Juventus defender this summer

Demiral spent the previous season out on loan at Atalanta and it is believed that they could make the loan move permanent for a transfer fee around €20 million.

As a result, it is safe to say that the long-term Juventus future of Demiral is unclear at this point of time but it will not be a major surprise if he does end up leaving the club this summer.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle United are able to swoop in and sign the defender. The 24-year-old Turkish international star has never quite been able to find his feet at Juventus, but had a decent loan spell with Atalanta and there is no question about his potential. Thus, if the Magpies are able to sign Demiral, it could turn out to be a major coup on the part of the club.
