Despite the good performances of Martin Dubravka, especially since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager, Newcastle Untied have been linked with one goalkeeper after another in recent times, as it looks like the club are keen to add to their options between the posts, and potentially bring in someone with better ability with the ball at their feet.

It had looked like they were closing in on a move for Dean Henderson not too long ago but now, those rumours have gone cold, as it looks like the Manchester United goalkeeper will not be heading to St James’ Park this summer.

They have also been linked with the likes of Kepa Arrizabalaga of Chelsea, Kasper Schmeichel of Leicester City, Jordan Pickford of Everton and Bernd Leno of Arsenal. Now, it looks like they have been handed a transfer blow, when it comes to the race for the German goalkeeper.

As reported by The Athletic, Fulham are in talks to sign Leno from Arsenal and he is thought to be keen on staying in London as well.

Newcastle United handed transfer blow in race to sign Leno from Arsenal

It goes without saying that this is not the ideal situation for Newcastle United. At the same time though, the Magpies should be confident that their project seems to have a much brighter future than the one at Fulham, who have spent several years jumping up and down the Premier League and the Championship.

Leno might be struggling to break into the Arsenal first-team right now, but he is still 30 years of age and should have plenty of football left in the tank.

Leno has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt as well and thus, could be a major coup for a club like Newcastle United. At the same time though, the Magpies have not been afraid to search far and wide for a goalkeeper and have recently been linked with Yann Sommer of Borussia Monchengladbach and the Switzerland national team.
