Newcastle United have been linked with a series of goalkeepers over the past few weeks and months as it has looked like Eddie Howe wants to improve his options between the posts. This is a bit surprising considering how well Martin Dubravka has done with the first-team gloves in recent times.

It had looked like their chase for a new goalkeeper had come to an end and they were set to sign Dean Henderson from Manchester United. But those rumours have gone cold over the past few days as it appears that the Magpies might have moved their interest elsewhere.

As reported by talkSPORT, Newcastle United are chasing Yann Sommer after cooling their interest in Henderson.

Newcastle United want a ball playing goalkeeper to replace Dubravka as their number one between the posts. Sommer’s current deal with Borussia Monchengladbach runs out in the summer of 2023 and he is believed to be reluctant to sign a new deal with the Bundesliga club.

If experience is something that Newcastle United are looking for in their next goalkeeper, Sommer could be perfect for that role.

He has been the number one for Borussia Monchengladbach for the past eight seasons, and even captained the Bundesliga side. On the other hand, he has been a stalwart for the Switzerland national team for the past decade or so.

Thus, if Newcastle United are able to sign the 33-year-old shot-stopper this summer, it could turn out to be a great addition for the club.

While some fans might raise their eyebrows at making a move for a player who is 33 years of age, as a goalkeeper, the Swiss international would be expected to have a good few years left in the tank. Also, he has been one of the most underrated goalkeepers in the game for a while.
