Newcastle United are expected to be looking to sign another centre-back this summer. One of the best decisions that Eddie Howe made in January was making sure that the club’s defence was improved before anything else. As a result, Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier were signed by the Magpies while Matt Targett was brought in on loan from Aston Villa till the end of the campaign.

Since then, Targett has also been signed on a permanent basis, following his impressive performances at left-back while on loan at St James’ Park.

It does not look like Newcastle United are satisfied with their defence though and are expected to make further additions there this summer. One player who has been heavily linked with the club is Lille’s Sven Botman but it looks like the Magpies have been handed a major blow in the race to sign the Dutch centre-back.

As reported by La Repubblica (via Caught Offside), AC Milan are closing in on Botman, who is keen to join the Italian champions. On the other hand, Arsenal have made a late move for him, hoping to hijack the deal and improve their own defence in the process of doing so.

There appears to be quite a bit of confusion around the Botman situation as some rumours have even suggested that Newcastle United have taken a lead in the race for his signature.

Thus, only time shall tell where he will ultimately end up but it is clear that Botman is a man in demand right now.

It is expected to take a transfer fee around €40 million to sign him from Lille and during his time with the French club, the Dutchman has shown that he is a defender with league-winning pedigree. Thus, if Newcastle United are able to sign him, it would be a major coup on their part.
