Newcastle United might have shelled out around €90 million in transfer fees last January but they did not make a statement signing, instead bringing in players who could fit into Eddie Howe’s team and steer them to safety. Some of those moves worked out, some did not, but ultimately, the overall was a huge positive as not only did they manage to avoid relegation, but also managed to finish 11th in the Premier League table.

Their ambitions are expected to be much higher though and as a result, they would be expected to strengthen the squad significantly this summer, with this aim in mind.

Also, one would expect the club to make a statement signing, to mark the change in ownership. And one player that they are being linked with who could fit this bill is Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco.

As reported by AS, Newcastle United are willing to put Carrasco’s €60 million release clause on the table. AC Milan are another club who have been linked with him, in case Rafael Leao leaves the Italian champions.

Newcastle United could make huge move for Atletico Madrid star

Carrasco has been one of Atletico Madrid’s best players in recent times and is someone who Diego Simeone is expected to place as one of the pillars of his team next season.

Thus, the Spanish giants are believed to have no interest in letting the Belgian star go but if somebody ended up meeting his release clause, then it could come solely down to the player and whether he wants to leave or not.

Carrasco has already left Atletico Madrid once in the past, to join Chinese club, Dalian Professional, before making a return to Simeone’s side. Would he be open to leaving them again if Newcastle United did indeed meet the release clause?

At 28 years of age, he is in the middle of his prime, is versatile and has top level experience. Thus, someone like him could be a great signing for Newcastle United.
