Newcastle United strengthened their defence heavily in the January transfer window by bringing in Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Matt Targett, on loan from Aston Villa till the end of the season. The signings had the desired impact as well, as their defence improved drastically after that and the Magpies were not only able to avoid relegation but also managed to finish at 11th in the Premier League, which is a huge turnaround to say the least.

Thus, Eddie Howe deserves a lot of credit for the job that he has done at Newcastle United till now and deserves to be backed in the summer transfer window.

Rumours have suggested that Howe might not be done strengthening the club’s backline and has his eyes on signing another centre-back this summer, after the success that Burn has enjoyed at St James’ Park since his arrival.

One player that they have been linked with heavily in recent times is Sven Botman. And as reported by Chronicle Live, sources in Italy have indicated that AC Milan are retaining confidence in getting a deal done for the Dutch centre-back. But with a takeover still in the balance, there is a chance for another club to swoop in and get a deal done for the defender ahead of them.

Newcastle United handed massive chance to sign Botman this summer

Botman has proven to be an excellent centre-back in recent times, even playing a key part in Lille’s recent Ligue 1 triumph. Thus, signing someone like him would be a considered as a major coup on the part of Newcastle United.

On top of all his qualities, Botman is still just 22 years of age and as a result, the Dutchman is expected to get even better as he gains more experience.

AC Milan are still believed to be the favourites for his signature but it is pretty clear that other clubs have an opportunity to swoop in. It is believed that a move for Botman would take an initial €30 million transfer fee plus add-ons.
