Newcastle United could sign Hugo Ekitike for surprise fee
Newcastle United are expected to be after a new striker this summer after neither Callum Wilson nor Chris Wood managed to convince that they could be the long-term solution for Eddie Howe’s side up front. Of course, one has to point out that the former did spend a large portion of the campaign out of action due to injury.
Thus, the club have been linked with a number of strikers in recent times. There have been some big names like Darwin Nunez of Benfica and Victor Osimhen of Napoli, two players that all the top teams in Europe are believed to be interested in. Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is another player who is believed to be a potential target for the Magpies.
Another interesting name that Newcastle United have been linked with recently though is that of Stade Reims’ young striker, Hugo Ekitike. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 11 goals and provided 4 assists in 26 appearances in the 2021/22 season. Still just 19 years of age, it is safe to say that the sky looks like the limit for Ekitike.
Yet, it appears that Stade Reims are ready to let him go for a transfer fee more than €20 million. As reported by Newcastle World, club president Jean-Pierre Caillot told French media:
"“The amount should be more than €20million. Afterwards, you have to know how to be reasonable.”"

Thus, it looks like the €20 million figure is the initial asking price for Ekitike. Ultimately, how much Stade Reims can get for his transfer would be dictated by how much clubs are willing to shell out.
There is plenty of interest in Ekitike’s signature from clubs around Europe, which is understandable considering the fact that the young striker has been extremely impressive and enjoyed a breakout season in Ligue 1.
Thus, it is not hard to see how the transfer fee that Stade Reims ultimately receive could be much higher than the €20 million figure. It remains to be seen if Newcastle United can get a deal done or not.
