Newcastle United are expected to make a splash in the upcoming summer transfer window although there have been conflicting reports about how much the club are prepared to shell out in transfer fees. Eddie Howe deserves to be backed though after the incredible job that he has done since arriving as the manager of the club, taking them from a relegation battle to a 11th place finish in the Premier League table.

If Newcastle United are to take the next step forward though, they must bring in a new striker. Neither Callum Wilson nor Chris Wood have shown enough this season to suggest that they could carry the goalscoring burden for the Magpies, especially if they have ambitions of challenging for European qualification spots.

Thus, the club have been linked with a number of strikers over the course of the past few weeks and months, with one such player being Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, who has enjoyed an outstanding season.

As tweeted out by Rodrigo Romano, Newcastle United are willing to pay what Benfica want to part ways with Nunez. There is talk of an amount close to €100 million.

It is safe to say that if Newcastle United did end up shelling out that kind of a figure to sign Nunez from Benfica then it would shake up the landscape of English football and be a statement of intent on the part of the Magpies.

Now, let’s see what the future holds and how things turn out moving forward.

There is very little question about the goalscoring prowess of Nunez though. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica this season. This includes goals in the Champions League against top sides like Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
