Newcastle United have been linked with a number of players over the course of the past several months. Some of them have seemed like realistic targets while others have felt like just rumours. But one would expect the Magpies to make a splash in the summer transfer window and also make a big name signing.

They have been linked with the likes of Darwin Nunez and Victor Osimhen, but signing either of them would be very difficult and would take a huge transfer fee.

There is one big name player that they have been linked with recently though, who could actually be available on a bargain transfer fee this summer. And that is none other than FC Barcelona’s Memphis Depay.

As reported by SPORT, the future of Depay depends on whether Robert Lewandowski arrives at Barcelona or not. If the Dutchman does leave in the summer, the La Liga giants are expected to look for a transfer fee around €20 million.

€20 million is not a big transfer fee in modern football, especially when you consider that the player is someone with the quality of Depay.

He was Barcelona’s big signing of the previous summer transfer window and has been a very important player in the Dutch national team for a while as well. But following the departure of Ronald Koeman and the arrival of Xavi as manager, he has found his long-term future at the Camp Nou up in the air.

If Newcastle United are able to sign someone with the quality of Depay, it would be a major coup for the Magpies.

Depay is a versatile player, capable of playing up front as well as a winger and already has Premier League experience as well, having played for Manchester United in the past. While his time at Barcelona might not have been the best, he was considered as one of the most exciting players in Europe during his time at Lyon just over a year ago.
