Newcastle United’s January transfer window went a long way in securing their place in the Premier League. Back then, the club were very much in the middle of a relegation battle and the Magpies decided to splash out, in order improve things at St James’ Park. Since the turn of the year, they have been one of the best in all of Europe and consequently in the Premier League as well.

One of the best signings that they made was to bring in Dan Burn. He has arrived and immediately improved things at the back for the Magpies. Before that, they had looked like one of the most defensively fragile teams in the Premier League.

But it looks like Newcastle United had their eyes on another defender last January, signing whom would have broken the club’s transfer record.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Newcastle United offered a €70 million transfer fee for Jules Kounde last January but it was turned down by Sevilla as they still had a chance to compete for the La Liga title.

Could Newcastle United make another move for Kounde in the summer?

Kounde is very highly-rated in Spain. He was arguably the best defender in La Liga last season, and even though he has not been as good this time around, there is no question about his talent or potential as a player.

Newcastle United are expected to sign another centre-back in the summer transfer window and if they can get someone with the ability of Kounde, it would be an incredible coup.

It will not be easy by any stretch of the imagination though. Barcelona are believed to be interested in the youngster.

On the other hand, Chelsea came close to a move last summer itself, and with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen set to depart the club, one would expect The Blues to go after Kounde once again.
