Matt Targett has proven to be a brilliant signing for Newcastle United to say the least. He was brought in on loan from Aston Villa in January till the end of the season and it is safe to say that he has been one of the reasons behind the Magpies’ incredible turnaround in form, as they have gone from a team struggling in the relegation zone to one that is going to finish in a respectable position in the Premier League table.

It is believed that a transfer fee around £15 million would be enough for Newcastle United to make Targett’s loan deal permanent and most fans would probably be delighted if they did.

Nothing is official yet, so one can only can wait and see, but as of this moment, he is still a player from Aston Villa on loan at Newcastle United. It remains to be seen if that will change soon.

Amidst all this, Steven Gerrard has commented on the situation and said that Targett would be welcome back at Aston Villa although he did admit that it was ultimately up to what Newcastle United decide to do. As reported by Birmingham World, the manager said:

"“He’s an Aston Villa player until different, so, if he comes back in here in pre-season and he’s available for us, great, because I’ve got two top full-backs. That’s a great position to be in as a manager.“I think the decision is going to be Newcastle’s at the end of the day. I haven’t spoke to Eddie on it.“I spoke to Eddie a while ago, saying how he was really happy with Matt and how he was playing but there’s been a lot of football that’s been played since.“It seems like it’s been a positive loan for Matty, from a personal point of view. But, it you ask me, I’d welcome him back no problem because it’ll mean I’ll have two top left-backs!”"

Will Targett join Newcastle United on a permanent basis or return to Aston Villa?

The general feeling is that Targett would like to join Newcastle United on a permanent basis as well after enjoying a tremendous loan spell at the club.

What has been confusing though is the fact that the Magpies have been linked with a number of left-backs in recent times. This has included the likes of Renan Lodi of Atletico Madrid and Mitchel Bakker of Bayer Leverkusen.

Thus, could the club possibly be looking for a different left-back? Only time shall tell. But considering how good Targett has been, it would be a mistake to let him go.
