Newcastle United appear to be headed for a very interesting summer transfer window. Not long ago, it had looked like the club were set for relegation. But following a superb January window, and the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager, the Magpies have been one of the best teams in the country and have not only managed to avoid the drop but are set to finish in a respectable position.

The season has gone in a completely different direction for Leeds United. At the start of the campaign, most would have thought that they were pretty safe after a very good 2020/21, but that has not been the case.

There is a good possibility that they could end up getting relegated although things are still pretty tight at the bottom of the table with Leeds United, Everton and Burnley all trying to avoid finishing in the 18th spot.

If Leeds United were to be relegated, it is expected that a number of their star players would head out of the club in the summer. And that is where things get interesting for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are leading the race for brilliant Leeds United star

As reported by Football Insider, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United in the summer. It is believed that the Magpies have made him a top target.

Phillips has been brilliant in recent seasons, not just for Leeds United, but for the England national team as well, establishing himself in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI and he played a major role in their run to the final of EURO 2020.

A lot will depend on whether Leeds United are able to stay up in the top flight or not. Some rumours have suggested that if they do end up dropping down to the Championship, a release clause will become active in Phillips’ contract.
