Borussia Dortmund hand Newcastle United transfer blow
Striker is viewed as an area of immediate need for Newcastle United. The club have been linked with one forward after the other in recent times and it is not hard to understand why. Callum Wilson is the Magpies’ top goal scorer this season till now despite just finding the back of the net 6 times till now.
On the other hand, the club must have been hoping that Chris Wood would solve their problems up top after joining from Burnley in a £25 million transfer deal in January. It has not quite worked out for the New Zealand international either though.
Thus, expect Newcastle United to be in search of a new striker in the summer. One of the names that they have been linked with in recent times is Stade Reims wonderkid, Hugo Ekitike.
They have been handed a blow in his pursuit though. As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United have been working on a deal for Ekitike since January and he is a top target. But Borussia Dortmund are now pushing for him as the Frenchman is on their list to replace Erling Haaland.
Newcastle United have been handed striker transfer blow by Borussia Dortmund, who are looking to replace Haaland
This is not great news for Newcastle United to say the least. Borussia Dortmund have a spectacular record of developing youngsters and as a result, might be an attractive proposition for someone like Ekitike.
The 19-year-old enjoyed his breakout season with Stade Reims this time around. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Ekitike has scored 10 goals and provided 4 assists in 25 appearances across all competitions in this campaign.
Those are brilliant numbers for a player of his age to say the least and the sky appears to be the limit for Ekitike.
As a result, if Newcastle United are successful in their pursuit of Ekitike, it would be a major boost for them. But Borussia Dortmund’s interest must definitely be a headache for them at the same time.
