Matt Targett has done a wonderful job since arriving at Newcastle United in the summer on loan from Aston Villa. As a result, many of the club’s fans are hoping that the Magpies will make his stay permanent and sign him from the Birmingham club. It is believed that he will be available for a transfer fee around £15 million, which is not huge when you consider the modern footballing transfer market and how well he has done for the club.

Yet, Newcastle United continue to be linked with one left-bac after the other. Earlier, it was believed that they had their eyes on Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi and now, it looks like they could be eyeing Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker as well.

The club had been linked with Bakker in January as well but could not get a deal over the line. Could they end up going back for him when the transfer window reopens in the summer?

As reported by Bild, Newcastle United are ready to pay a €20 million transfer fee for Bakker.

Newcastle United linked with surprise move for Bayer Leverkusen’s Bakker

Newcastle United have been linked with several left-backs in recent times and as a result, one has to wonder whether these are just rumours or if the club believe that they can bring in someone better than Targett in the summer.

It will certainly be interesting to see and Newcastle United could be headed for some of the most interesting months in recent years for the club.

When it comes to Bakker, he has been solid ever since joining Bayer Leverkusen from PSG last summer. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 29 appearances for the Bundesliga giants this season, scoring once and providing 4 assists.

He is also just 21 years of age and would be expected to get better moving forward. But the big question is – do Newcastle United need Bakker right now?
