Newcastle United are expected to look very different come next season with a huge summer transfer window coming up. The Magpies have made some tremendous progress since the turn of the year but at the same time, it has become clear that there is still a lot of room for improvement, especially when you look at their recent results against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

Thus, there are expected to be incomings at St James’ Park over the summer with the club being linked with a variety of names over the past few weeks and months. But at the same time, several players could end up heading in the opposite direction as well, after struggling for minutes since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager.

Sean Longstaff is one player who has struggled for playing time recently, having had to spend a lot of time sitting on the bench since Howe arrived at St James’ Park.

Naturally, the 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club, especially with his current deal set to run out in the summer, but it looks like Howe wants to keep him at Newcastle United. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Keith Downie said about the situation:

"“Eddie Howe has made it clear he wants to sign him. I don’t think in his current guise, and the way he’s playing just now, it would be to be a starter next season. I think he would be an option for them.“To be fair, he’s come in and he’s played well. He played well against Norwich the other week, arguably man of the match in that game. He didn’t really do so well against Man City on the weekend, but then you’ve got a thankless task up against De Bruyne and Rodri in midfield.”"

Howe wants Longstaff to stay at Newcastle United

Once upon a time, Longstaff was one of the most highly rated young players at Newcastle United but it is safe to say that things have not gone his way in recent times.

He is still just 24 years of age though and has plenty of time to get things back on track, and Howe might be the right manager to help in that regard.

It would be a brave decision on the part of Longstaff though if he does end up extending his deal with Newcastle United when you consider his recent lack of game time. Let’s see how things unfold.
