Newcastle United might have splashed out around £90 million in transfer fees in the January transfer window but they did not make a statement signing though. Most fans expect that to change in the summer and for the Magpies to make at least one big name signing. Who that will be remains to be seen.

The club have been linked with several of Europe’s most exciting talents like Darwin Nunez and Victor Osimhen. But an outside of the box choice could turn out to be Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho’s career has stagnated since leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in one of the biggest moves in history. During his recent loan spell at Aston Villa, he has shown though that he still has a lot of football left in the tank. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists in 15 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side till now.

As reported by GOAL, Newcastle United are willing to shell out the €40 million transfer fee that Barcelona want for Coutinho. But Aston Villa have an option to buy set in the loan deal. Now, it remains to be seen whether they will take up that option or not.

Would Coutinho be a good signing for Newcastle United at this stage of his career?

Like several other players in recent years, Coutinho has just not been able to get it done since moving to Barcelona.

A move away from the club has appeared to serve him well though and he has done quite well at Aston Villa. Thus, it is not questionable for Newcastle United to consider a move for him despite his struggles in recent years.

A lot will depend on what Aston Villa want to do though as they have the option to sign him for a €40 million. If Gerrard’s side decide against taking it, Newcastle United might have a pretty decent chance of pulling a deal off for the Brazilian star.
