The progress that Newcastle United have made since the arrival of Eddie Howe is admirable to say the least. Not too long ago, they had seemed destined for relegation but not only have they manged to beat it, but they look set to finish the campaign in a respectable position as well, especially considering where they were a few months back.

But at the same time, it has become pretty clear that there is a lot of improvement needed in this team if they are to compete with the truly elite teams in the Premier League. The 5-0 defeat against Manchester City at the weekend was a reminder of that.

Thus, this summer will be very important in the next phase of Newcastle United’s evolution and expect them to strengthen the squad further.

One player that they have been linked with for a long time is Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard and it was even believed that they were close to signing him on loan in January. His current deal with the Red Devils runs out in the summer though and as a result, there is a good chance that the Englishman will be available as a free agent soon.

There does not seem to be any lack of interest in Lingard’s signature though. A report from the Daily Mail states:

"Lingard is now in talks with Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle, with negotiations said to be at an advanced stage with two of those clubs."

It goes without saying that those are some of the biggest clubs in the world and as a result, if Newcastle United are able to beat them to Lingard’s signature, it would be considered as a major coup on the part of the Magpies. Let’s see if they can pull it off or not.

Lingard was nothing short of incredible during his loan spell at West Ham United last season but has not gotten enough chances to show that for Manchester United since returning.

His chances of staying on at Old Trafford have not been completely ruled out yet though with Erik ten Hag arriving as the new manager of the club soon.
