Newcastle United must have come into the game against Manchester City thinking that they could get a result. The Magpies have been one of the most in-form teams in the world since the turn of the year. On the other hand, Pep Guardiola’s side had been handed a huge shock earlier in mid week, after Real Madrid scored three times within a short space of time to knock them out of the Champions League.

Thus, this game was always going to go one of two ways. Either Manchester City would struggle to bounce back from their mid week blow or they would put in a statement performance.

Unfortunately for Newcastle United, it was the latter and at the end of the game, Guardiola’s side had a 5-0 win and a 3-point lead over Liverpool in the Premier League to show for their efforts.

On the other hand, it was another big defeat for Newcastle United against one of the traditional Big Six. They have also lost to the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in recent times and have a game against Arsenal coming up.

Howe did not seem to be interested in any excuses after the game. As reported by Newcastle World, the manager said about the 5-0 defeat vs Manchester City:

"“There’s no better learning curve than playing Liverpool and Manchester City. They’ve taught us a lot about potential areas we need to improve.“We can’t be too negative about today. We should view it as a way to come back next season stronger.”"

That is certainly the right attitude to have about this loss. The Magpies might have come a long way over the past few months but they still have a long way to go as well and are still quite some way from challenging the Big Six.

This was a tough lesson for the club but one that will hopefully serve them well in the long run. The next game is against Arsenal and hopefully, they will put up a better performance on that occasion.
