Most of the talk around Newcastle United in recent weeks and months has been surrounding bringing in new players in the summer and strengthening the squad further. But at the same time, it will be important for the club to retain a large part of the squad already at St James’ Park and not make some major overhaul within a short span of time.

As a result, it will be important for The Magpies to hand new deals to players whose current contracts are running out in the summer or in the near future.

Sean Longstaff is one such player, whose current deal is up in the summer. Interestingly, the midfielder has not played a lot of regular minutes under the management of Eddie Howe and thus, questions have been raised about the 24-year-old’s future at St James’ Park.

But as reported by The Times, Newcastle United have offered Longstaff a new four-year contract in their attempt to keep him at the club with Howe eager for him to remain with The Magpies. The player is believed to have sought assurances over his playing time and has been told that he is an important part of the team’s future.

Newcastle United have offered new four-year deal to Longstaff

Once one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in English football, Longstaff’s career has not progressed at the rate that many would have hoped that it would have.

But there is no question about his talent or potential, and at 24 years of age, there is plenty of time on his side to develop and improve his game further to take it to the next level.

Howe has shown that he is the type of manager who can get the best out of his players and it will be very interesting to see what he can do with Longstaff if he does indeed decide to sign a new deal with Newcastle United.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Longstaff has only played 522 minutes of football during Howe’s stint as Newcastle United manager till now.
