Newcastle United beat Real Madrid to brilliant signing
Newcastle United did some impressive transfer business in the January window and we have seen the impact of the new arrivals on the results. At that point of time, relegation was a very real possibility for The Magpies. But now, they are sitting at 9th in the Premier League table and finishing in the top half might even be on the cards. It is safe to say that it is one of the most remarkable turnarounds in English football history.
While Eddie Howe deserves a lot of credit for that, so do the January arrivals, who appear to have done their job of rejuvenating the squad even if all of them might not be on top form.
Out of the five players that Newcastle United signed in the middle of the season, including Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa, Bruno Guimaraes is pretty much the pick of the bunch when it comes to his potential of becoming a key player for the club for years to come.
Newcastle United shelled out a huge transfer fee to sign him from Lyon and the Brazilian is already starting to show what he is capable of. And this might just be the beginning. The Magpies beat some impressive clubs to his signature as well.
Newcastle United beat Real Madrid to Guimaraes signing
Arsenal were believed to be very interested in Guimaraes but they do not appear to have been the only ones. As reported by Chronicle Live, Real Madrid had him on their summer shortlist before Newcastle United pushed to complete a deal. The Spanish club were never prepared to table a transfer bid in January.
Thus, the Newcastle United board deserve a lot of credit for pushing on when other clubs wanted to wait till the summer before making a move. And because of that, not only have they managed to beat relegation but might have set up their future as well.
Guimaraes is the type of player that Howe could potentially end up building his midfield around. And at 24 years of age, he is only expected to get better moving forward.
