Newcastle United have been superb since the turn of the year and have secured their place in the Premier League. It will be key though that they build on this momentum and improve their squad further in the upcoming summer transfer window. If they are able to do that and continue performing at this level, it is very possible that they might be able to compete for top six spot next season.

One player that Newcastle United must try to sign on a permanent basis is Matt Targett, who is currently on loan at St James’ Park.

Targett has impressed since joining the club in January and it is believed that it would take a transfer fee around £15 million would be enough to sign him. But at the same time, it looks like the club have alternative targets as well.

As reported by FootballTransfers, Renan Lodi remains a target for Newcastle United. Talks between the club and Targett are set to take place at the end of the season, with both parties happy with how things are going. But the Atletico Madrid left-back remains another option for The Magpies.

Newcastle United linked with surprise move for Lodi

The best case scenario for Newcastle United would be for them to sign Targett from Aston Villa on a permanent basis. He has been excellent since arriving on loan and is already a key player for the club.

Lodi is an interesting option to consider as well though. The left-back is only 24 years of age and already has plenty of top level experience, having spent quite some time at Atletico Madrid and has made multiple appearances for the Brazil national team as well.

But anytime a club makes a move for a player from a different league, there is a certain amount of risk involved, about whether he would be able to adjust to the Premier League. In the case of Targett, we know there won’t be any such problem.
