While Eddie Howe might have only been at Newcastle United for just half-a-year till now, he has already proven that he is the man to take this club forward. The Magpies have been one of the best teams in the entire Premier League since the turn of the year and while once relegation looked to be on the cards, now they might even end up finishing in the top half of the table.

That is a remarkable achievement for sure, and both the players and the manager deserve immense credit for the turnaround over the course of the past few months.

This is just the beginning though and one would expect Newcastle United to achieve greater heights moving forward. Thus, they must continue rebuilding this squad over the summer.

While The Magpies have been linked with a number of high-profile names over the past several weeks and months, it looks like their first signing of the summer could be a familiar face. As reported by i, Newcastle United are close to a deal for Matt Targett and have the framework of it agreed. The full-back is currently at St James’ Park on loan from Aston Villa.

Newcastle United are believed to be close to sealing Targett move in the summer

Targett arrived on loan from Aston Villa in January and he has made quite an impression since then, establishing himself in Howe’s first-team picture.

It is believed that it would take a transfer fee around £15 million to sign him on a permanent basis from Aston Villa and to be honest, that should be a no brainer for Newcastle United at this point of time.

While they can go out and sign a different left-back in the summer, there would be an element of risk involved in that. On the other hand, Targett has already proven himself at Newcastle United and shown exactly where he fits into this team.
