It is incredible that Callum Wilson is still the top scorer for Newcastle United this season despite being out of action since December, after picking up a long-term issue in the game against Manchester United. That does not reflect the full picture though as the former Bournemouth striker was not very prolific either before being injured, and found the back of the net only 6 times this season till now.

Newcastle United did sign Chris Wood in the January transfer window from Burnley in a big £25 million deal but it has not worked out as one would have hoped, with the New Zealand international struggling to find the back of the net consistently.

Thus, the club will surely be hoping to have Wilson back in the mix as soon as possible but journalist Dean Jones does not believe that he is going to be a main player for them next season.

As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Jones said:

"“They obviously want him back, but I don’t think Callum Wilson is going to be a main player in this team next season, to be honest.”"

Will Wilson be a key part of Newcastle United’s starting XI next season?

It is definitely quite easy to see why such a claim would be made surrounding the future of Wilson. He has been out of action for a long time while their options up front is being viewed as a weakness for them at this point of time.

Thus, it would not come as a surprise to anyone if The Magpies did end up signing another striker in the next summer transfer window, as they definitely need someone in their ranks who can find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

One has to feel that Wilson does deserve a run in in this in-form Newcastle United side and show what he can do with them. His scoring record was decent earlier on in the campaign but this team is on a completely different level right now.
