Newcastle United have made tremendous progress over the course of the past few months. At one point this season, they were considered as heavy favourites to be relegated from the Premier League. But they have managed to turn it around since the turn of the year and have climbed up the points table. At the moment, they are quite comfortably above the drop zone and it seems improbable for them to end up in the Championship next season.

Thus, the players and Eddie Howe deserve a lot of credit for the job that they have done. The focus of Newcastle United must be on improving further though, as the current side cannot compete with the Big Six anytime soon on a consistent basis.

Thus, do not be surprised  to see Newcastle United make significant additions to their squad over the summer. But with there expected to be a relatively tight transfer budget, the club might have to look towards the free agency market.

As reported by The Northern Echo, Newcastle United are hoping to bring Christian Eriksen as one of their flagship signings of the summer transfer window. His short-term deal with Brentford runs out at the end of the season. Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have also been linked with the Denmark international but The Magpies are growing increasingly hopeful of being able to beat off the competition.

Would Eriksen be a good signing for Newcastle United?

Eriksen has certainly impressed since joining Brentford in January. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored once and assisted twice for them in 6 appearances till now. He has also scored recently for the Denmark national team.

Thus, Eriksen is one of the feel good stories in football right now and at still just 30 years of age, one would hope that he has plenty more football left in the tank.

Someone like Eriksen could be a solid signing for Newcastle United. Not only is he a terrific player at his best, but he has plenty of top level experience as well, having represented clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Ajax and Inter Milan through the course of his career.

The big question is whether Newcastle United will be able to win the race for signature though, with heavy competition expected. One cannot rule out the possibility of him staying on at Brentford either.
