Eddie Howe opens up on Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans
Newcastle United have already undergone a major transformation since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager. They splashed out around £90 million in transfer fees to sign Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes and Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa. And it is safe to say that these moves have had the desired effect overall, as The Magpies have risen up the Premier League table and look set to avoid relegation.
Most fans expect Newcastle United to continue splashing out though, as they are still a long way from competing with the Elite clubs even though they have been one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League since the turn of the year.
Reality could be pretty different though as it looks like Newcastle United could be much more conservative in their approach to the summer transfer window than they are expected to be.
As reported by BBC, while Howe admitted that they will need to continue to improve, he is not expecting a revolution at St James’ Park:
"“I am happy with this squad while acknowledging that time never stands still.“You have to continue to improve and evolve so I have no problem looking outward and saying we do need certain things.“But I do not think it will be the revolution that everyone thinks it will be, and it can’t be because we are under financial restrictions.”"
Eddie Howe opens up about Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans
There have been conflicting rumours about what Newcastle United’s transfer budget could be in the summer. There have been suggestions that it could be around £60 million while others have claimed that it will be similar to the £90 million that the club shelled out on transfer fees in January.
It remains to be seen how things ultimately turn out, but it does look like it will not be the huge Premier League altering transfer window that many are expecting from the club, since the change in ownership.
And that is understandable, as it was always going to be a long-term project to take this Newcastle United side up the Premier League ladder. One has to remember, they were relegation contenders this time around. While the ultimate goal has to be for The Magpies to compete with the Big Six on a consistent basis, do not expect to see that happen in the immediate future.
