Darwin Nunez has burst onto the scene this season and how. The Benfica star has been one of the most in-form strikers in all of Europe and has proven himself in the Portuguese league and the Champions League. As a result, it is unsurprising that some of the biggest clubs in the world are being linked with a move for the Uruguayan international in the upcoming summer transfer window. Newcastle United are one of them.

Newcastle United’s biggest problem at the moment is the lack of a striker who can score goals on a consistent basis. Callum Wilson has been out injured since December and even he was not the most prolific in front of goal. On the other hand, Chris Wood has failed to make much of an impact since arriving from Burnley in a £25 million move in January.

Thus, if Newcastle United are able to sign someone like Nunez, who is scoring for fun at the moment, it would be a dream signing for them.

The Uruguayan striker is expected to be leaving Benfica in the near future and is believed to be rated at a transfer fee around €80 million. And as tweeted out by Mark Douglas, Newcastle United want him to be their marquee name this summer.

Newcastle United want Darwin Nunez to be their marquee name

Newcastle United might have splashed out around £90 million in the January transfer window but they are yet to make a marquee signing. Could Nunez end up being that player?

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 32 goals in 37 appearances this season for Benfica. And it is not just about the number of goals that he has scored but the opposition that he is scoring them against. Nunez has found the back of the net against Liverpool, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the Champions League,

That just goes on to show that he can get the job done against the very top teams in world football.

Of course, it is going to be incredibly difficult to sign Nunez in the summer as he is being linked with several top teams right now, including the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and many others.
