Newcastle United came into their game against against Wolves knowing that they needed to get a result and pick up some much needed momentum. The club had lost three games on the trot, 1-0 vs Chelsea, 1-0 vs Everton and 5-1 vs Tottenham Hotspur. It was a bad run of form to say the least, especially for a side that had done so well since the turn of the year.

A few more bad results and serious doubts might have started to creep back in at Newcastle United, and they could have very easily been dragged into the relegation battle once again.

But a goal from the penalty spot from Chris Wood was enough to seal a 1-0 win and hand Newcastle United three very important points against a Wolves side currently sitting at eighth in the Premier League.

The win was a huge step towards safety for Newcastle United and Eddie Howe appears to recognise that. As reported by Newcastle World, the manager told Sky Sports:

"“We still have work to do but that was a massive step forward tonight. It brings us closer to safety. I hope there will be a different Newcastle in the future but we have to play a certain way to get results at the moment.”"

It was a tight contest with a spot kick from Wood separating the two sides, and it is safe to say that Newcastle United needed this result at this point of the season.

It leaves them a relatively comfortable 10 points above the relegation zone, although Burnley have played a couple of games less than them till now.

But even then, it is hard to see The Magpies being dragged back into a relegation battle from this point. Instead, it is very possible that one of Everton and Burnley could end up facing the drop, while things are not looking too well for Norwich City and Watford.

There is still a portion of the season still to be played though and a late run of form could potentially guide any team to safety as the gaps are not huge.
