Although they are being linked with the Barcelona star, Newcastle United’s first target at the moment has to be to stay up in the Premier League. They have taken major steps in that regard in recent months. While The Magpies appeared to be headed for relegation at one point of time, they have gone on an incredible run of form since the turn of the year and as a result, they find themselves sitting at 15th, a comfortable 9 points above the relegation zone, right now.

They are yet to find the consistency to compete with top teams though, as evidenced by their three straight defeats against Chelsea, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively. The game against Antonio Conte’s side was a particular low point as it ended in a 5-1 defeat.

Thus, it is clear that Newcastle United need to improve further over the summer, and it looks like they have their eyes on a Barcelona star.

As reported by Superdeporte, Newcastle United have already inquired about Memphis Depay, as have Arsenal and Everton.

Newcastle United have inquired about Barcelona’s Memphis Depay

Barcelona have enjoyed a great run of form in recent months, following the arrival of Xavi as manager. Depay has found playing time harder to come by under the management of the Spaniard though.

Depay was Barcelona’s marquee signing of the summer transfer window. But a combination of lack of form, change in managers, injury struggles and reduction in playing time, mean that the Dutch international’s future at Camp Nou is pretty much up in the air.

Depay has not played the full 90 minutes in a La Liga game for Barcelona this year till now. But there is no question about his talent or potential.

He is also just 28 years of age. Thus, someone like Depay could be a brilliant addition for Newcastle United, although it is not going to be easy to bring him to St James’ Park.
