Callum Wilson is still the top goal scorer for Newcastle United this season. But, he has not made a single appearance for the club this year, having been injured last December against Manchester United. On the other hand, Chris Wood has not been able to find the back of the net consistently for the Magpies, since his £25 million transfer move from Burnley in January.

Thus, it is safe to say that Newcastle United are lacking a prolific goalscorer right now and could do with Wilson back in the mix of things.

There were hopes that he could be back later this month, for the game against Crystal Palace at St James’ Park. But now, those plans seem to be off the table, in what is a major blow for The Magpies.

As tweeted out by Luke Edwards, Wilson’s recovery is not progressing as it was hoped and the plan for him to return is being pushed back:

Wilson has not been the most prolific goalscorer himself this season. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 6 goals in 15 appearances till now.

That was for a Newcastle United team that was struggling. It will be interesting to see what he can do for a team that has been one of the most in-form in Europe since the turn of the year.

It looks like his return to the pitch is still some time away though, and it remains to be seen if he can make some appearances before the end of the campaign. There are just nine more Premier League games left to be played.

Fortunately for Newcastle United, they have been doing quite well despite the lack of a striker in form, and a win or two more could be enough to avoid relegation.
