Newcastle United made a number of additions to their squad in the January transfer window and they have, for the most part, had the effect that the club would have been hoping for. The Magpies have been one of the most in-form teams in all of Europe this year and as a result, they are very close to staying up in the Premier League by avoiding relegation.

Newcastle United were not able to sign every player that they tried to in January though. And one such player was Jesse Lingard.

Rumours suggested that Lingard was open to a move to Newcastle United as well but the club could not agree a loan deal with Manchester United.

The England international’s current contract with the Red Devils runs out in the summer though. And as tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have no intention of opening talks for a contract extension with Lingard. Thus, it looks like he is set to leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

Newcastle United have another chance to sign Lingard

Lingard has barely featured for Manchester United this season, but he already showed what he is capable of in the previous campaign, while on a half-a-season loan at West Ham United.

During that period of time, he was one of the most in-form players in the Premier League and it is a massive surprise that Manchester United have not given him more minutes this season, after how well he had done for the Hammers.

Now, it appears that Newcastle United will have a second chance to sign Lingard, this time on a free transfer. But competition for his signature is expected to be high, with the likes of West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur also being linked with him in recent times.
