Newcastle United eyeing AC Milan captain on free transfer
Newcastle United strengthened their defence significantly over the January transfer window. The club signed Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion and Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, while also bringing in Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa till the end of the season. These moves have had the desired effect and The Magpies have improved at the back significantly, consequently moving up the Premier League table.
But that does not mean that Newcastle United will stop strengthening at the back moving forward. On the contrary, they have been linked with several centre-backs in recent weeks as potential summer signings.
One player that they appear to be interested in is AC Milan captain, Alessio Romagnoli. His current deal runs out in the summer.
As reported by TUTTOmercatoWEB, Newcastle United have expressed their appreciation for Romagnoli in recent weeks, as have Juventus and Sevilla. Lazio are also interested in the Italian international. AC Milan have not given up hope of him extending his current deal and it looks like talks are still open between the club and the player.
Newcastle United eyeing free transfer for AC Milan’s Romagnoli
Signing someone like Romagnoli could be a masterstroke on the part of Newcastle United. Not only is he a very good centre-back but a leader at the back too, who captains one of the most historic clubs in the game and could be about to lift the Serie A title this season.
Also, Romagnoli is just 27 years of age and as a result, is in the middle of his prime as a footballer right now.
Thus, if Newcastle United were able to sign him, especially on a free transfer, it would be considered a major coup on the part of the club. But at the same time, it is clear that there will be heavy competition for his signature.
