One of Newcastle United’s most surprising decisions of the recent January transfer window was their attempt to sign Eden Hazard from Real Madrid. As reported by El Nacional, The Magpies made a €40 million transfer bid plus €10 million in variables. The offer met the expectations of Florentino Perez but the Belgian did not want to make the move to St James’ Park.

Now, that is understandable, considering the situation that Newcastle United were in at that point of time, with relegation looking like a real possibility.

The situation has changed since then though and at the moment, it does not look like The Magpies are headed for the drop anymore. And next summer, you would expect them to make additions to their squad with the aim of moving significantly up the Premier League ladder.

Thus, would it make sense for Newcastle United to try to sign to Hazard once again, as his situation at Real Madrid shows no sign of improvement?

Should Newcastle United try to sign Hazard from Real Madrid once again?

One of the best Premier League players of all-time, Hazard’s time at Real Madrid has been an absolute nightmare.

He has had to deal with one injury after another and barely featured for Los Blancos. Even when he has, he has not been able to show the incredible quality that he did during his seven-year Chelsea career.

On top of his game, it would have been a no-brainer to sign Hazard. One has to question though, is he capable of ever reaching that level again?

He is 31 years of age and so much of his game is based on skill, speed and the ability to get past his man. With the series of injuries that he has suffered since joining Real Madrid, it is hard to imagine that he can get back to prime physical fitness.

Thus, signing Hazard at this stage of his career, especially for that kind of a transfer fee, would most probably be a mistake for Newcastle United.
