Former Newcastle United player forced to retire at 23
Paul Woolston was Newcastle United’s third-choice goalkeeper during their Championship winning campaign in 2016/17. He never managed to make a senior appearance for The Magpies although he made several appearances for the youth sides. He also spent several spells out on loan during his time at St James’ Park. He would ultimately get a somewhat surprising move to Manchester United.
The goalkeeper also represented England at the youth level and was a part of the Under-17 squad for both the World Cup and the European Championships.
Unfortunately for Woolston, he has been struggling with injuries in recent times and as reported by Manchester United’s official website, has had to retire from football at the age of 23.
Woolston had undergone a couple of operations and a lengthy rehabilitation period but ultimately, it was not enough for him to return to the pitch and he has been forced into retirement at a very young age for a professional footballer.

It goes without saying that this is very sad news. It is always hard to see someone being forced to hang up the boots at such a young age, when they surely would have wanted to play for many more years.
We can only hope that Woolston finds success in the next phase of his life, whether he decides to go into coaching, or something outside of football.
A number of players have been forced to retire at a young age but have then gone on to achieve success in football. Thomas Tuchel is a brilliant example of that. The German had to step away from the game in his mid-20s, due to injury, as well but is one of the best managers in the world today.
We wish Paul the best of luck for the future.
