Newcastle United appear to be pretty close to being safe from relegation this season. Not too long ago, they had seemed destined for the drop but after a brilliant upturn in form since the start of 2022, they find themselves in a much better position right now and could even be contenders to finish in the top ten of the Premier League this season. The Magpies will have much bigger targets next season though.

Newcastle United are expected to compete for top titles in the near future but next season, their immediate target must be qualifying for a European competition.

For that to happen, they might need to strengthen their squad further and left-back could prove to be an area of need. Matt Targett arrived on loan from Aston Villa in January and has done a fantastic job since then, but till now, it is uncertain whether he will stay or leave in the summer. There have been conflicting reports surrounding his future. On top of that, Jamal Lewis could be set to leave as well.

Another left-back that Newcastle United were linked with in January is Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico. He appears to be interested in a move to Barcelona though.

As reported by TNT Sports, Tagliafico said about negotiations with Barcelona:

"“There was an interest, the clubs spoke, but they did not agree… It was something complicated for the club at the moment, but I think surely now in June there will be an ease.”"

It remains to be seen if Newcastle United end up resurrecting their interest in Tagliafico in the summer.

It could all depend on the future of Targett and where he ends up next summer. If Newcastle United are able to sign him, it is hard to see them make a move for another starting left-back, after how well the Aston Villa loanee has done this season.

But that is not certain at the moment and as a result, it is important for Newcastle United to keep all options open.
