Insider makes surprise claim about Matt Targett’s Newcastle United future
Newcastle United pulled off a bit of a transfer masterstroke when they signed Matt Targett on loan from Aston Villa in January. He has been one of the best signings of the January transfer window if not the very best. The 26-year-old has come in and established himself at left-back in Eddie Howe’s starting XI, and has played a huge part in The Magpies’ brilliant form this year.
Thus, there is very little doubt about the fact that the fans would want Targett to remain at the club beyond his loan deal.
Some rumours have even suggested that Newcastle United have already agreed a £15 million permanent deal for Targett, which if true, would be considered as a major coup. But now, there appears to be some doubt about the move actually taking place.
As reported by GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Dean Jones said regarding Targett’s future at Newcastle United:
"“Matt Targett’s future is up in the air at the moment.“There is a possibility that he will join Newcastle but, at the moment, it doesn’t seem likely.”"

The claim certainly comes as a bit of a surprise as many were of the belief that Targett was set to remain at the club for the foreseeable future after the incredible start that he has made to life at St James’ Park.
Now, it looks like that potentially might not be the case. But then, if he does indeed end up leaving Newcastle United, what does the future hold for him. Will he just return to Aston Villa and try to establish himself as a starter there? Or are there plans to join a different club?
At the end of the day, nothing is official yet and we might have to wait for that to happen for the situation to become clear. But if Targett does end up leaving Newcastle United, it is safe to say that The Magpies will need to sign a left-back in the summer.
