Newcastle United made one of their best transfer decisions in a while by signing Dan Burn from Brighton & Hove Albion in January. He has come in and made an immediate impact at the back in Eddie Howe’s side, as the defence looks much more organised now than it has in the past. And the 6′ 7″ centre-back deserves a lot of credit for The Magpies’ rise up the Premier League table, as they have been one of the most in-form teams in Europe this year.

Thus, we have already seen the effect that signing a solid centre-back can have on this team. Could they try to repeat the trick in the summer?

Perhaps, try to bring in a Champions League-winning centre-back. Someone who has arguably been the best defender in the world over the last year or so. Of course, we are talking about Antonio Rudiger.

And as reported by the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are aiming to take advantage of Chelsea’s plight by making a move for Rudiger.

Newcastle United have their eyes set on Rudiger

Rudiger’s current deal with Chelsea runs out at the end of this season and a contract extension has not been agreed yet.

Also, Chelsea face an uncertain future right now with the club up for sale and a change in ownership coming soon. Until then, they cannot offer new contracts to any player. And the closer we move towards the season, the more questions there will be about Rudiger’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle United will face tough competition though even if Rudiger ended up leaving Chelsea as a free agent in the summer, with some of the biggest clubs in the world believed to be interested in signing the German international, including the likes of Manchester United and Juventus.

Of course, one cannot rule out the possibility of him staying at Chelsea either, with the German beloved around Stamford Bridge.
