Despite their defeat at the hands of Everton, it feels unlikely that Newcastle United will be dragged back into a relegation battle this season, thanks to their incredible run of form since the turn of the year. The club’s successful January transfer window is a huge reason behind this. And they are expected to strengthen their squad further next summer, as qualifying for Europe has to be their next target.

Darwin Nunez is someone that Newcastle United have been linked with over the past few months and it is not hard to see why.

The Uruguayan striker is enjoying a tremendous campaign with Benfica. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 26 goals in 33 appearances for the Portuguese club this season till now. Also, he scored the goal against Ajax that sent them to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Newcastle United appear to have been handed a blow in the race for his signature though. As reported by Record (via TEAMtalk), Nunez is dreaming of a move to Manchester City or Atletico Madrid. Thus, The Magpies could be left waiting.

There is no question about the fact that Nunez is one of the most talented young strikers in the world right now. And still just 22 years of age, he is expected to get even better moving forward.

As a result, Nunez would be considered as a brilliant signing for most clubs in the world, especially Newcastle United, who do not have a prolific goalscorer in their squad at the moment. Their top scorer this season is Callum Wilson, with 6 goals to his name till now.

But it is clear that the competition for his signature is going to be very difficult. Other than Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, Manchester United are also believed to be interested in the Uruguayan international.
